Snow-covered peaks, the Mandakini River, and the spiritual atmosphere create an unforgettable journey. Moreover, the challenging trek makes the pilgrimage even more meaningful because every step strengthens faith and devotion.

Whether you are planning your first Kedarnath Yatra or returning for another darshan, this complete guide covers everything you need to know.

History of Kedarnath Temple

The history of Kedarnath Temple dates back thousands of years. According to Hindu tradition, the Pandavas built the original temple after the Kurukshetra War. They wanted to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva for the sins committed during the battle.

However, Lord Shiva wished to avoid meeting them. Therefore, He disguised Himself as a bull and disappeared into the Himalayan region. Bhima recognized the bull and tried to catch it. Before he could do so, the bull disappeared into the earth.

The hump of the bull appeared at Kedarnath, while the remaining body parts manifested at four other sacred locations:

  • Kedarnath – Hump
  • Tungnath – Arms
  • Rudranath – Face
  • Madhyamaheshwar – Navel
  • Kalpeshwar – Hair

Together, these five temples form the famous Panch Kedar pilgrimage.

Several centuries later, Adi Shankaracharya reconstructed the present stone temple during the 8th century. Since then, Kedarnath has remained one of India’s most sacred pilgrimage destinations.
