According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Vishnu meditated at Badrinath while Goddess Lakshmi took the form of a Badri tree to protect him from harsh weather. The temple is believed to have been established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, reviving it as a major center of pilgrimage and devotion. Since then, it has remained one of the holiest spiritual destinations in India.
